Samsung Galaxy S3 vs. Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Samsung Galaxy Nexus was the first Smartphone to house Android’s Ice Cream Sandwich, which catapulted it to fame. But having successfully shadowed its predecessors S and S II, Samsung Galaxy S III has also captured imaginations of thousands. Both phones have impressive technical specifications and offer a rich Android experience, milking the multi-core CPUs each possess (dual- and quad- respectively).

Samsung Galaxy S3 vs. Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Let’s have a look at the comparison of both the phones.

Samsung Galaxy S3 vs Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Design

It is quite apparent that design cannot be the decider of this battle; both are almost equally stylish and attractive. They have similar sizes with rounded corners, as seems to be the trend with the Galaxy series phones. One thing that works for Nexus and against S III is that the latter has capacitive buttons right under the display which may be pressed by accident. Galaxy Nexus has ‘physical’ keys which eliminates the problem. Also, some users argue that Nexus looks cleaner than S III, probably because the former does not use up almost all the space available on the handset for the screen. But since could work either way, we have to take the battle to the next parameter.

Display

As mentioned earlier, Samsung Galaxy S III manages to accommodate an expansive 4.8-inch display in roughly the same physical size that Nexus uses to manage a 4.65-inch screen. But otherwise, they are a spitting image of each other as both have Samsung’s characteristic HD Super AMOLED display and 1280 x 720p resolution. With a smaller screen, Nexus has marginally better pixel density, but you will notice it only if you look very closely. Even though both run on same visual technology and probably have more saturation that human eye can appreciate, there are slight differences. S III’s colors look more vibrant the Nexus display looks more toned down and real.

Hardware

Galaxy Nexus runs on a dual-core TI OMAP 4460 processor clocked at 1.2GHz, while S III boasts of a 1.4GHz qua-core Exynos 4412 processor. While the former was not ground-breaking by any stretch, S III’s processor was clearly revolutionary. In camera, S III again beats Nexus’ 5MP with its own crisp 8MP snapper. With both scoring more or less the same in other aspects like 1GB RAM, internal and extendable memory, S III is a clear winner.

Software & Performance

Nexus and S III are rocking Android Ice Cream Sandwich in their own way. As Nexus is a Google phone, it is evident that a stock version of ICS will be installed in it. S III on the other hand has more customizations because of Samsung TouchWiz interface. While most Smartphone veterans turn up their noses at TouchWiz, Samsung has done more than a decent job with this phone. S III also has better sound coming from the earpieces, while Nexus sounds a bit noisy, although both have weak speakers. Both the batteries last about two days of relaxed usage. So again in this round, S III is a winner, but only just so.

Verdict

With small victories in different departments, the crown goes to Samsung Galaxy S III. It has a better display (let’s face it, we want more colorful, not more ‘life-like’), superior hardware and a fuller performance to give it a boost in the heady competition with Nexus.

Galaxy Nexus is definitely a good option if one likes to get all the updates beforehand.Being Google’s own phone,it definitely has an edge over others when it comes to OTA updates.
